PADI Divemaster

If you've got to the point of thinking about becoming a PADI Divemaster you've probably already completed quite a few dives and come across qualified PADI Divemasters at some point in your Diving Career.

PADI Divemaster is the first professional level in PADI. Its about you becoming a role model for students and qualified divers. You need to have demonstration quality skills so part of the course is refreshing all those skills you mastered as an open water student to a point where you are expert. You also need to be fit enough to look after yourself and others so there is a timed waterskills assessment and some work on your rescue skills. On the theory side you need to be confident enough to answer questions about diving theory and what a PADI Divemaster can do so lots of reading and a few multiple choice exams. And then there's building your confidence in leading dives so there is some mapping work and emergency planning for dive sites.

Its a course that stretches people and certainly makes them better divers. But its not all about diving. Lots of this course is about understanding and dealing with people. Where you need to be before you start your PADI Divemaster

Before you start a Divemaster Course you need to be at least 18 years old, have medical clearance from a Doctor stating your fitness to dive, have current CPR training, and be qualified to PADI Rescue Diver level or equivalent.

You also need to have logged at least 20 dives. The more diving you have done in a variety of situations then the easier you will find the course.

Certification Requirements

As well as completing all the course requirements at the time of certification you must have completed at least 60 dives demonstrating experience in night diving, deep diving and underwater navigation. Your CPR training must be current - that is within the last 2 years. When you become a PADI Divemaster you become a member of PADI. Membership fees will be payable to PADI. In return you'll get copies of the Undersea Journal, member pricing on selected PADI materials and the support of the PADI organisation.

Working in the UK

If you work in the UK as a Divemaster you will need to pass an annual HSE medical. If you plan to work in the UK then it may be wise to complete an HSE medical before you start your course..
